The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA) is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as its National Executive Director. This is a unique opportunity to lead a national non-profit organization dedicated to marine search and rescue, boating safety, and maritime environmental response within Canada’s coastal waters, Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.
About the CCGA
Formed in 1978, the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA) is a not-for-profit organization of six regional auxiliaries with more than 4200 volunteer members, united by a common mission: to save lives on the water through:
- Maritime search and rescue services in partnership with the Canadian Coast Guard and the Department of National Defence.
- Promote safe boating and water safety in partnership with Transport Canada and industry stakeholders.
And provide observe, record and report services in support of the Canadian Coast Guard Marine Environmental and Hazards Response Program, which aims to reduce the impact of marine pollution.
The Executive Director (ED) plays a critical role in unifying national efforts, advancing strategic initiatives, and amplifying the voice of diverse volunteers across Canada. As the sole employee of the National organization, the ED will provide a hands-on leadership role in advocating for issues germane to the industry. The ED will bring strong communication and marketing experience, recognizing regional differences in finding a communal voice for the national body. Well-versed in government and industry relations, the ED will build strong relationships with sponsors and stakeholders and will work to ensure that the organization is fiscally and financially responsible. They will work with the Board in strategic planning, while working with the regional bodies to drive marketing, visibility, and awareness of the importance of CCGA’s efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership for day-to-day operations of the national organization.
- Support the National Board in developing and executing strategic plans.
- Lead financial planning, budget preparation, and fiscal oversight.
- Prepare Treasury Board submissions and manage national funding programs.
- Oversee the national insurance program and associated policies.
- Elevate the CCGA’s public profile through communications, marketing, social media, and website management.
- Establish and manage national fundraising, sponsorship and donation programs.
- Collaborate with domestic and international SAR organizations and stakeholders.
- Support the ongoing development and maintenance of the SAR Management System (SMS) – Data Management System.
- Coordinate and support Board meetings, prepare reports, and lead committees and working groups.
- Special projects and fulfil additional duties as directed by the Board.

Essential Qualifications
- Strong understanding of search and rescue
- Minimum 5 years of executive leadership experience
- Marine background
- Proven ability to work with government departments and other stakeholders.
- Skilled in negotiation, conflict resolution, and team leadership.
- English communication skills (Comprehension, Writing and Speaking)
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- French communication skills – both written and verbal.
Other Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must be willing to travel nationally and occasionally internationally.
- A satisfactory Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector search is required.
